White-Glove Delivery Services

White-glove delivery buys people, not speed. A two-person team, a delivery window rather than a drop, the item carried to the room it belongs in, unpacked, assembled if it needs it, and the packaging taken away with them.

The phrase is used loosely, which is the root of most of the trouble. Four different service levels sit behind it, they cost very different amounts, and the words for them are standard across the industry — so using the right one is the single most useful thing you can do at booking.

Curbside is the one that surprises people. The driver is not obliged to help you move it, and for a single-driver delivery of something heavy they often cannot — the item comes off the truck onto your driveway and the rest is your problem. It is the cheapest tier and the correct choice only if you have the people and the route into the building already sorted.

Threshold gets it out of the weather and no further. A garage, a lobby, the first room inside the door. Common for freight-carrier deliveries of boxed goods and often what “we deliver inside” turns out to mean.

Room of choice is the tier most people actually want when they say white glove and are quoted for something cheaper. The item reaches the right room — up stairs if needed — but stays in its box.

White-glove adds the unpacking, the assembly and taking the packaging away.

If you book on price alone you will usually get the first and expect the last. Say which of the four you want, in those words, and the conversation improves immediately.

What drives the price

What white-glove does not automatically include

This is where expectations break most often. Unless you have confirmed it specifically, do not assume the crew will:

Ask about the specific task rather than the category. “Do you do white-glove?” gets a yes. “Will you mount this to the wall and take the old one?” gets the real answer.

When it is worth paying for

Three cases where it usually is:

Fragile or high-value goods. Antiques, artwork, instruments, medical equipment. The value is in fewer handoffs and trained handling, not in speed.

Anything one person cannot safely carry. If the alternative is you and a friend on a staircase, the difference in cost is smaller than the difference in risk to the item, the building and both of you.

Items bought secondhand or at distance. Estate sales, auctions, online marketplace purchases — see the guide on getting a large item home, which covers the collection-and-packing problem specifically.

Questions worth asking

  1. Is this curbside, threshold, room of choice, or full white-glove?
  2. Is assembly included, and does that cover my specific item?
  3. Will you remove and dispose of the old one?
  4. How many crew, and what is the charge if it takes longer than quoted?
  5. What is the liability limit, and how do I raise it?

A note on what this directory is

Companies here say they offer white-glove or two-person delivery. We are not paid for placement and a listing is not a recommendation — confirm crew, inclusions and liability with the company before booking.

Frequently asked questions

What is white-glove delivery service?
A premium delivery where the item is carried inside, placed where you want it, unpacked, assembled where applicable, and the debris removed. The distinguishing feature is the crew — two trained people rather than one driver — and the fact that the job ends with the item in use rather than in a box at the door.
Do you tip white-glove delivery drivers?
There is no obligation, and a good crew will not imply one — but it is common, and the job is physical. Around $10 to $20 a person suits a straightforward delivery, and $20 to $50 a person is fair where there were stairs, a long carry, several heavy pieces or assembly work. Check your paperwork first, because some carriers state that gratuity is included in the service fee, in which case it is not expected. Tip per person, not per delivery, since white-glove is a two-person job by definition.
What is curbside delivery?
The cheapest tier, and the one that catches people out. The item comes off the truck at your kerb or driveway and stops there — the driver is not obliged to help move it, and on a single-driver delivery of something heavy usually cannot. Choose it only if you already have the people and a route into the building. Everything after the kerb is yours.
What is the difference between white-glove and threshold delivery?
Threshold delivery stops at the first dry space inside the door — a garage, a hallway, a lobby. Room-of-choice carries it to where it goes. White-glove goes further again with unpacking, assembly and debris removal. The three are priced differently and are routinely confused at booking, which is where most disappointment comes from.
How much does white-glove delivery cost?
More than standard delivery by a wide margin, because you are paying for two people for the length of the job rather than one drop. Price is driven by crew time, stairs and access, distance, whether assembly is included, and whether an old item is being removed. Ask for the quote broken out by those, not as a single number.
Does white-glove delivery include assembly?
Sometimes, and it is the most common gap between what people expect and what they booked. Assembly is frequently a separate line, and some carriers will assemble but explicitly not mount to a wall, connect plumbing, or handle anything electrical. Confirm the specific task, not the category.
Is white-glove delivery insured?
Carriage liability is usually limited by weight and is often far below the value of the item, exactly as it is with freight. For antiques, artwork and high-value furniture, ask about declared value coverage in advance — the moment to discover the limit is not after the corner has been damaged.
